"The water god, in anger, cuts a hole in the sky.
The sky opens. Rain pours out like a river, submerging the earth,
allotting one man the fate to choose between saving his villagers from
the flooding waters or being loyal to his wife and yet unborn
son.
Notions of love, existence, and universal versus
personal obligation are tested in this modern myth based on an ancient
narrative form called “Shuo-chang,” literally meaning
“speak-sing” in
Mandarin Chinese. The narrative mixes Portuguese, Tetum, English,
Taiwanese, and Mandarin interchangeably with the sound and space of
voice (Jen Shyu, composer), dance (Satoshi Haga, choreographer), viola
(Mat Maneri), clarinet (Ivan Barenboim), vibraphone (Chris Dingman),
and percussion (Satoshi Takeishi). Poetry by Patrícia
Magalhães, commissioned by the Jazz Gallery with support from
the Jerome Foundation."

After showing footage, I'll perform on vocals, piano, Taiwanese moon guitar, and er hu, and the "lakado," a bamboo instrument from East Timor, playing some original compositions inspired by different aspects of this fieldwork over the years. It will be casual, open to Q/A, followed by a workshop (instrumentalists and vocalists should be prepared to play should they wish to).
**100% of proceeds will go directly to the teachers, singers, and instrumentalists who graciously allowed me to record and learn from them.

"The water god, in anger, cuts a hole in the sky.
The sky opens. Rain pours out like a river, submerging the earth,
allotting one man the fate to choose between saving his villagers from
the flooding waters or being loyal to his wife and yet unborn
son.
Notions of love, existence, and universal versus
personal obligation are tested in this modern myth based on an ancient
narrative form called “Shuo-chang,” literally meaning
“speak-sing” in
Mandarin Chinese. The narrative mixes Portuguese, Tetum, English,
Taiwanese, and Mandarin interchangeably with the sound and space of
voice (Jen Shyu, composer), dance (Satoshi Haga, choreographer), viola
(Mat Maneri), clarinet (Ivan Barenboim), vibraphone (Chris Dingman),
and percussion (Satoshi Takeishi). Poetry by Patrícia
Magalhães, commissioned by the Jazz Gallery with support from
the Jerome Foundation."

The Qin, or guqin, is a seven-stringed zither with a 3,000-year history
in China. What is singing is a project that Wu Na began in
2007. This name is inspired by one of the oldest anonymous Qin
compositions, “Shen Ren Chang” (“Freedom of the
Sage”). “What is
singing” means: there is no restriction on the Qin. It
could be a
way to approach modern times, modern art or even modern life.

Themes of physical helplessness, spiritual displacement, isolation, and
forced love run through the lives of both ancient and recent ancestors
which merge in this ritual for voice, dance, and string ensemble.
The piece connects the characters of Shyu’s late Taiwanese
grandfather
born in 1914 with Lady Wen-chi, a princess abducted by nomads
from her Han Dynasty kingdom around 195 A.D. The
commissioned work brings to life a fourteenth-century handscroll
painted to accompany the poetry of Liu Shang illustrating Lady
Wen-chi’s story; and intertwines it with a man’s
20th-century life
culminating in spiritual quest. Commissioned by Roulette with
funds provided by the Jerome Foundation.

all-star cast of musicians and singers join Sundiata to unite art and
